Panel c: Chapel

Landulph Methodist Church

Built with Portland stone in 1874 on an exposed site, the church has become a familiar landmark with its unique single tower. It became a Listed Building in 1987, just in time to thwart a proposed plan to close it and amalgamate with Saltash Methodists at their new Wesley complex.

In 1997 Landulph's Baptist church in Cargreen's Fore Street closed its doors and its members were welcomed into the Landulph Fellowship.

This fine building is the one that 125 years ago a Wesleyan minister, Thomas Thompson of Callington, informed the Registrar General that 'a building known as a Wesleyan Chapel, situated at Landulph, is to be used as a place of worship by a congregation calling themselves Wesleyan Methodists'.

As with many other places of worship, the Methodists hold just a single Sunday service these days, whereas, until recent years, two services were being held.

This year, the Harvest Festival service was held on Sunday September 5th and continued next evening - followed by the traditional Harvest Supper.

Constructed in 1850, the beautiful organ was installed after the building of the chapel. Unfortunately, no one knows when. Its fine tone is heard when organists Freda Braund, pictured here, and Mavis Edmonds play on alternate Sundays.

The 'old chapel' in Fore Street, Cargreen has a connection with both Landulph churches ... before it was bought by an Anglican rector to be used as a Rectory Room for the parish, it was where the old Wesleyan Methodists met prior to 1874.
