The Barretts

In The Surnames of Cornwall, Dr Bernard Deacon notes that the Barrett name was well established in southeast Cornwall by the late 1400s. His research also confirms that it was the most common surname in the 18th century across both Landulph and Botus Fleming parishes.

Stepping back further in time, I know from my own research, that the Manor of Ashton near St Dominick was once known as Ashton Barrett, named after the Barrett family who owned it, which can trace its origins back to John Barat, who was recorded as tenant in 1244.

Miss M Pascoe

Headmistress, Landulph Primary School, 1963-1968

Marjorie (as I'm now allowed to call her) was born in Ashton, Cornwall, November 1930. She was one of seven children. Her first teaching post was in Germany, 1953, teaching children of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). From there, she returned to England, teaching at a School in the East End of London.

In the early 60's, her mother was of ill health, so she took a sabbatical, returned to Ashton and purchased a bungalow, "Penrose" in which both parents remained for the rest of their days. In 1963, Marjorie took up the role of Headmistress at Landulph Primary School (Children attendance 13), being interviewed, beforehand by the then School Governor, Bridget Best, of Marsh Farm.

The Village of Cargreen and the Parish of Landulph was a very different insular place, back then and must have seemed a World away from the war torn suburbs of Germany and London.  While teaching at Landulph, she took up lodgings in St.Stephens Rd., Saltash and would either cycle or travel to school in a little blue Morris 1000. Marjorie left Landulph Primary School, in 1968. Moving back down into Cornwall, to take up a Head Mistress post at Falmouth Comprehensive School.
