Miss M Pascoe

Headmistress, Landulph Primary School, 1963-1968

Marjorie (as I'm now allowed to call her) was born in Ashton, Cornwall, November 1930. She was one of seven children. Her first teaching post was in Germany, 1953, teaching children of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). From there, she returned to England, teaching at a School in the East End of London.

In the early 60's, her mother was of ill health, so she took a sabbatical, returned to Ashton and purchased a bungalow, "Penrose" in which both parents remained for the rest of their days. In 1963, Marjorie took up the role of Headmistress at Landulph Primary School (Children attendance 13), being interviewed, beforehand by the then School Governor, Bridget Best, of Marsh Farm.

The Village of Cargreen and the Parish of Landulph was a very different insular place, back then and must have seemed a World away from the war torn suburbs of Germany and London.  While teaching at Landulph, she took up lodgings in St.Stephens Rd., Saltash and would either cycle or travel to school in a little blue Morris 1000. Marjorie left Landulph Primary School, in 1968. Moving back down into Cornwall, to take up a Head Mistress post at Falmouth Comprehensive School.

For us lucky few, now all in our Sixties and Seventies, who lived and were taught (and mothered) by Miss Pascoe, in those halcyon 1960's days, I'm sure you'll agree, there is reason to believe, we were blessed.

While down in Cornwall, recently, I carried out, what seems like my annual pilgrimage and visited Marjorie. She still lives at "Penrose".  Always will. The village has grown around, her little Bungalow. A time capsule, in amongst the new of today. At the now grand age of 95 (96 in November) she still has a mind, sharp as a Pin, knowing all her past Landulph Children-by name. General topical conversations, whether Worldly or closer to home, would flow between us, freely, and she has a Wit, to die for. Even chuckled loudly, when I suggested that at her time of life, she shouldn't buy green Bananas. I'll remember that one, she said.

She is truly a remarkable woman.

Miss Pascoe sends her love and kind wishes, to you all.
